Welcome to Liberty Lives! #7
Lake Side – Mayor Damine
These days Damine can be found working on a new exciting project.
Damine: “Hi Elfin, I am working on a different theme deed at the moment, close to the main deed, building a Frontier Town. I have always built in brick and mortar and I want to try something different. I have it planned out in my head and I think it will look cool when done, just so long as I don’t get side tracked. I have mild obsessive-compulsive disorder so if I am travelling along the deed and see something I missed, or don’t like now, I have to stop and tear it down and rebuild.”
Damine is not new to Wurm.
Damine: “I started playing Wurm around 2013 after year of playing Everquest as I wanted something different and Wurm offered what I was looking for in a game.
“I truly don’t care about grinding skill. Just about making cool massive deeds and repeating that.
“My first experience in Wurm was being new, getting lost, and slaughtered by hell hounds. Then spending days plotting how to pull those dogs off my corpse to get my stuff back.”
Elfin: “How did you get them off?”
Damine: “A player with higher fighting skill came to my aid. He even died twice. He had been shopping at the Tap Dance market and offered to help. We became good friends for years after that. Until the server Xanadu opened. I moved there, he stayed on Celebration and we slowly stopped talking.
“I ended up living right next to Tap Dance. Maybe you know Waaruku?”
Elfin: “Yes, I do. So Wurm gave you death, a new friend and a challenge?”
Damine: Yes, I loved being able to create my own world. That is the main plus of this game. What I fell in love with.”
“My new project I am working on here is something I have never done before. I have always built castle-style themes. This one is a country western fort style.”
Our chat was rudely interrupted.
Damine: “Not sure how this troll got in here but one second. He walked into the wrong spot my arena I built, a custom idea. I have seen others like it since I built mine. I built it when I found a unique way of making steps as seats by using wide stairs.”
The troll was dealt with and we continued on.
Damine: “What attracted me to Wurm Unlimited was that the lack of grind to gain skills. The last year I played Wurm Online I got sick of grinding to gain skills.
“And what attracted me to Sklotopolis? A few things did.
“I got the game the first day it came out. Sklotopolis was second most populated server with a good ping. Then what made me stay was the skill rate was not too fast nor too slow, it was about right speed for gains.
“The community was good and I liked the way events were handled. I liked that the Admin’ actually helped with things, like when I needed a tower moved they did it.”
Elfin:” Can you remember when you joined? You were one of the first players on Sklotopolis weren’t you?”
Damine: “I was not the first, however I was one of the first.
“[16:06:41] You entered through the portal to Wurm on Luck day, week 1 of the Snake's starfall, 980. That's 890 days, 1 hour and 27 minutes ago.”
“My first thought was to grab the spot close to the trader, a good idea for a while until GM stopped giving them coin.
“There were no free horses then, however there were many roaming as the server had just opened.
“They did give us free flowers since no flowers were growing a game bug prevented them from growing. It was important to have flowers to make a love tile for meditation. We were all happy that they did that and I knew then that the GM were looking out for the players here and so I knew that this was the server for me.”
Elfin: “So settling near the trader meant you chose, and settled in, the spot you are today?”
Damine: “Yes, at first I was not sure if I was going to stay here. It was so over-crowded. However people moved and left and now I have expanded.”
Elfin: “What were the unique fights like then? Did the uniques rule the server?”
Damine: “It is very true a few fights we just couldn’t win and had to retreat. The first Troll King was like that. We finally caged him and had at least 40+ players, which we thought were more than enough to slay him. After half an hour of fighting and the Troll King had no damage to him we called off the fight. We then had to re-cage him. Our fight skills were still too low.”
Damine then turned back to the subject most dear to him, his buildings.
“My castle was the largest building here. I have not completed it yet. I wanted it taller and since I cannot go wider, even with 98 carpentry skill using the maximum tiles allowed, with planning and combining the building with bridges I have made it appear bigger.
“To begin with it was a shed, a 1x1 building of stone. I have added, and added, and added until it is what it is today.”
Then Damine recalled a recent fight he had had on the new Dungeon PvP server in Sklotopolis.
“On the PvP server I solo’d the demon dude with my long bow. I was heading to one of those supply drops/depot to get supplies and there it was. I did not think too much, just shot an arrow at it. That demon can run, 50 km/h, it’s fast. I didn’t have a radar gun but it was fast. I had to keep kiting it around in a circle for over half a hour firing arrows. I finally killed it and now have the embalmed corpse. Luckily I had two crates full of arrows and a quality 95 bow. My archery skill was at 95 also, as you level up quickly there.
“I train up in archery on PvP as it is the best way to kill enemy horses at a distance.”
“I like the challenge of PvP, it is fun if the numbers are the same or if my kingdom outnumbers the enemy kingdom. I don’t like it if outnumbered.
“I played it for awhile and would do it again. I was in the middle of a project when the first month began and did not have a lot of time to play.
“They need to remove the mods that allow you to see your enemy through rock on the PvP server. I want to do it again.”
Elfin: “How about the hunger games?”
Damine: “If those were set in the future and we had the C.I.A. spy satellites, okay. However, this is based on non-science times. Yes I will always play unless 7 Days To Die comes out with it’s update and then I would be playing that as it is my favourite game. It is building based but hide from Zombies, not Hell Hounds.”
Elfin shuddered, “I would have nightmares for months,” and then quickly changed the subject.
“I see you have market stalls.”
Damine: “Yes I had them from early on. I also place merchants in the doorways - they need neon signs.
“Wurm Unlimited is a little like Wurm Online with markets. Slow at times. However, deals are to be found if you look. You will never find a deal if you do not look for them.
“I used to make a lot of coin on Wurm Online by seeing what people had on their merchants then up-selling in the chat trade channel before buying it and mailing it off.”
“I no longer play Wurm Online as it is too slow and grindy.”
Elfin: “You have also done a bit of mining?”
Damine: “OMG! Lots of mining, lots.”
Damine then got a faraway look...
Damine: “I see a few bridges I may have to tear down and re-do. I don’t like the curves in them and now want flat bridges attached between buildings. But that can wait.
“I have four deeds plus a boat tunnel which I am working on from New Town to the Northern Sea. It’s not completed yet, it is only 3 x 200 so far and I need another 3 x 1000 or more to go.”
Elfin: “Would you like a hand with it?”
Damine: “Help is always welcome.”
My deeds are:
• Lake Side, where my castle is.
• The outskirts farm.
• The northern area where the boat tunnel will finally end and
• A moving deed which is where I mine now.
“I plan to move and drop the middle deed as I need, as the mining moves.
“Think about it, on-deed I can reinforce a tile, pave it and even build a structure against a wall in the mine. At some places it is 30 wide with building and it’s not a one-tile wide tunnel - I have sidewalks on both sides of the underground river and two-wide along it. Having it deeded as I work makes it a lot easier.
“If I do it alone, I think about six months, maybe, to complete, maybe longer.
“No settlements in the way. The only obstacle has been the occasional ore vein.
“For those I use my Magranon priest with strongwall spells and the meditation path of power. Two strongwalls, then lava tile removes the unwanted vein.
“I have learned from many years of practice and many mistakes.”
“I love when I hear the drum roll of a possible rare item, I hate it when I accidentally make 50 yokes instead of planks.”
Elfin: “Have you ever been trapped in a mine?”
Damine: “I did once trap myself between a tall wall and my buildings many years ago. No way out as I only had a trowel, bricks and mortar and was off-deed. The only way out was to suicide and return with my catapult. I also learned to check the craft window that the tall wall I was building was not a high iron fence gate. I had villagers with me at the time and they kept dropping food from the floor above saying don’t worry, at least you won’t starve.”
This is a true story and happened at North Shore on the Celebration server.
Damine got a faraway look again.
Damine: “It was fun in our village, moving players’ beds out to sea while they were logged out and they would wake up in the water.
“Another thing was to take any boat that was not locked or moored and just leave it in a random place. It was legal to do that then.”
Elfin: “So you were a pirate?”
Damine: “I prefer recovery agent.”
“My third home was on Xanadu and I had no choice where I settled. I had my large cart and was scouting for a deed on foot and fell off a cliff. Even with 30 climbing skill there was no way out and it took me a month to build a road up and over. Good thing I had a tent. I built a shack and started a new adventure of how to get out of this. I did not suicide out as I would have lost the gear plus over 50 silver.
“If you have ever been to Xanadu you will know that the terrain can be unforgiving.”
Damine began to get that faraway look again so Elfin quietly packed her notepad and tip-toed away.
THE TOUR
Heading over to Lake Side, Elfin met up with Iamyourfather in the BG tunnel. Racing each other they finally arrived at New Town. There was Damine waiting to greet and guide to his deed.
Damine: “Hello all.”
Elfin: “Meet Goodgirl our photographer today.”
Goodgirl: “Hi.”
Goodgirl smiled then got lost working with her camera.
Elfin: “Also meet Iamyourfather.”
Iamyourfather: “Hi there.”
Elfin commented on their journey through the BG tunnel and asked Damine if he had helped mine it.
Elfin: “Did you help build it?”
Damine: “No, I was mining here, on my own deed then.”
Elfin: “What were you mining?”
Damine: “That is another unfinished project, an underground maze.”
Introductions and small talk over the tour began.
Damine: “When I stepped out the portal it was a new New Town and all wild lands.
“I figured being close to town would have been an advantage for me and being able to help new players since I started with experience.
“I built a lighthouse and a motel with free beds for guests.
“I wasn’t sure if you wanted to see inside the motel.”
Damine gave us a tour of the motel. Very grand.
Elfin “Let’s take the selfie in front of main gate.
Damine “I loved how the Valrei thing fits in the gate way.”
Iamyourfather: “Yes, it fits well.”
Damine: “I guess now you would like to see inside the castle.
“All buildings are connected in this area via bridges and secret doors.”
Iamyourfather: “Secret doors?”
Damine: “Hidden by books shelves or some other thing.”
We soon saw that the room had secret doors everywhere and spent a lot of time running in and out.
Elfin: Laughing at the gnomes. “What was the gold statue for?”
Damine: “That gold one was prize for best deed a while back when Sklotopolis was a new server.”
Damine: “This is the unfinished trophy room.
“Gold hota dragon skull, rare fireplace and more to come soon I hope.
“These are workshops left and right side.”
It was fun exploring - there were hidden gardens and quiet places everywhere.
Damine: “My merchant in the doorway.
Damine “I have one for personal stuff.
“My banker.
“I keep it locked so I don’t have to mange price on the goodies which I don’t want to sell.”
Elfin admired the way the bed was dyed. A recent addition to the game, then suddenly realised Damine had cleverly made this area into a jail, with amenities.
Elfin: “Your own jail.”
Damine: ”Something different.”
Damine “These workshops are not completed because I have just built and recently moved my old shop here.
“It is nothing special, just a simple work place.”
Iamyourfather: “I like the forge layout.”
Damine: “Now going up. Bedrooms.”
Iamyourfather: “Very nice feel here.”
Damine: “Each room has a balcony. Four bedrooms are on this floor.”
Elfin: “Your gardener has been pruning I see.”
Damine: “The main tower. You can see the entire deed from here.
“From here you can see other lookout towers.”
Iamyourfather: “It feels very European.”
Damine: “That’s what I was telling Elf about my new project being totally different this time.”
Elfin: “Did you build the wall to the harbour.”
Damine: “Yes. Built the entire area, tons of earth got moved. See I took care when planning the harbour. Now even the big ships are at ground level to unload.”
Iamyourfather: “Nice touch.”
Damine: “Won that Hota at a slaying in an auction.
“I had champion cat in here that just died. The chicken was for food if it wanted live food.”
Damine: “The library.
Damaine: "And the pottery shop, for making clay bricks and amphoras.
“All these buildings connect without going outside. There’s the leather and tailor shop.”
Damine: “That way is back to main castle.”
Elfin: “I do like traders in the doors.”
Damine: “Yeah, give them a home instead of a stall.”
Damine: “These next two buildings are not connected to the main castle though. I have no plans to do that yet.”
Elfin: “I do like traders in the doors.”
Damine: “Yeah, give them a home instead of a stall.”
Damine: “These next two buildings are not connected to the main castle though. I have no plans to do that yet.”
Damine: “My exhibit hall. Lots more work in here yet.”
Then we wandered into an area that had been under construction last time Elfin had visited. This was the fight arena
Damine: “I was going to host one-on-one fighting tournaments.”
After checking out the seating, looking for the best seats at future events Elfin spied some traps in the grass.
Iamyourfather didn't and got his toe caught.
Then into another wonderful building which houses the rare mobs Damine has fought.
We all posed with Damine’s recent kill, the Sol Demon.
We all posed with Damine’s recent kill, the Sol Demon.
Damine: “I’ve been collecting rare ones, or unique ones I should say.
From there it was on to the grand church.
Iamyourfather: “It’s so beautiful.”
Damine: “Yeah, Celtic style. Come up to the top.
Damine: “From here I can catch those sleeping in church, ‘Wake up in the back row’.”
After enjoying the view we all took the short way down.
Elfin:”Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.”
We then raced out into the sunlight again.
Damine: “A little farm and breeding area. One other building I’ll show you later is the underground.
Damine “Here is the outdoor winery but that’s not the building. This is a kind of green house also.”
Of course Elfin needed to sample the brew for the sake of science. Iamyourfather was just wandering around sampling at random - also in the cause of science of course.
Iamyourfather: “Holy wine - you think the white wine might give you more of an insight about religion!”
Then in the event chat channel both Iamyourfather and Elfin got special messages.
Elfin: “What’s your message Iamyourfather?
Iamyourfather: “It says, ‘You are getting drunk’.”
Elfin: “Cheeky!.” I have been told I suddenly realise I have more of an insight about longsword.”
Damine: “I am not sure of the effects of that wine as it was made before the food update.”
Refreshed we wandered on.
Damine: “This is going to be my fancy hotel, 90 percent done.”
Elfin: “Hours of work.”
Damine:”Months.”
Damine: “My boat tunnel area. The mine door is going to be gold soon.”
Damine: “This is wine yard and market area.”
Into the mine and Elfin spied an interesting looking puddle.
Elfin: “What is this?”
Damine: “Bad mining. The ceiling height is maxed and so I had to mine down there.
“It is vast down here.
“I expanded all three of my deeds.”
While Damine went to get the large cart to continue the tour Iamyourfather and Elfin checked out the dock. There was a dolphin and crabs.
All aboard the large cart and the tour continued.
Down into the mine.
Damine: “A boat entrance, not main one though.
“Here is the main boat tunnel area.
“It will be three wide with sidewalk. I have done 50 tiles so far, lots of work to do
“I watch Netflix and mine.”
After a tour of the mine and new tunnel Damine drove us out.
Damine: “Now a sneak peak at the next project with a Wild West theme.
“Every corner has an arrow tower
“Going to have palisades set so you don’t see any house walls from outside.
“That’s about it for now.
“Once the deed is complete the only way into fort will be four entrances like this but finished.
“This is incomplete. About 400 more trees are needed.”
On our way back Damine cut down a tree that annoyed him by growing into one of the grand buildings.
Damine: “Didn’t like that growing into the building.”
Damine then recruited us to cut some trees in the perimeter, a small contribution to his new project.
Damine “All these here can go, I will replant later.”
Iamyourfather: “Timmbeerrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Damine: “Don’t forget to watch for beehives. Stupid game gets me all the time with the beehives.”
Damine: “That’s probably enough for now.
“I have had fun, thanks for the mini event.”
Damine waved us goodbye before we deforested his entire deed.
Thanks Damine for the tour of such a fabulous deed and for showing your great buildings to us. We were very impressed with the designs. A castle is not always what it seems.
We hope you enjoyed reading another edition of Liberty Lives!
