As a potential new player, I'm wondering how the market is. Seeing as there is no deed upkeep, which lessens the incentive to earn coin, do players still commonly trade with each other, or do they tend to do everything themselves? Is there room for people to sell their crafts, or is it like WO and limited mostly to rares and bulk goods?

Take my view with a grain of salt, as I'm not the most active right now.. But, a lot of people are sell sufficient yes, a lot of us have been here for years. The thing is though, there is always new players coming to Sklo I'd call the market semi-active. Deed expansion still costs money, so a lot of people will sell stuff for that. The trade chat I often see people wanting to buy stuff. I'm lazy, I will always buy things. Such as the bulk market that sells mortar etc, I always make a trip there when I have a new project. I've actually had quite a few trades where I would make a high QL dye in trade for a different item. I prefer this type of trade goods for goods. This server is great though, you should try it out for sure. Very active playerbase!

I am constantly buying things as a long time player, and there seems to be a market for everything. You can also check out the market section of the forums for activity. I think the matter is more about being creative, and finding a niche that needs filling on the server, and learning what that niche is, rather than trying to wedge in a place that has little traffic or may not need yet another vendor and then giving up.

It is hard to describe. You can mostly buy anything. You can sell high quality and expensive items.
The market is very slow for low quality stuff. There is a culture of people wanting the finer things, even when they can only afford lower quality. So experienced players only buy finer things, and new players want and save up for finer things. That means that newcomers are going to struggle to sell anything to other players. However, grinding a skill up only takes a few days, so if you wanted to become a successful seller you could raise one of your skills and concentrate on selling one thing that you do very well.
There are dozens of player-owned merchant stores, but that merchandise moves very slowly, glacial pace. Trade by chat and forum works well for bulk or expensive items.
Keep in mind that you can raise funds by working on public works construction (roads, towers, tunnels). That's good income as well without having to try to sell things to players.
Also wanted to reply to this: > Seeing as there is no deed upkeep, which lessens the incentive to earn coin
Not exactly the case. While there is no upkeep, you can use money to expand your deed, and most importantly to buy goods (bulk mats, tools, weapons, specialty mats) and services (enchantments, bulk work, imping). There's plenty incentive to raise funds because a lot of great things are available for purchase if you can afford them.

Stargrace said it so well. This has been my experience as well. I have set up a small market and some weeks it is sold out and other weeks nothing has moved. With the market I have tried to be inventive - we have a posh stall with expensive, enchanted items and the beginners stall with basic tools etc of middling to high ql. We have a bibs n bobs stall with all sorts odd things that some players will buy yet not make.
