How to run multiple clients without killing Steam:
I am not sure how people are doing this now but I came across the following process recently and it works perfectly
1, Go to you wurmlauncher directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Wurm Unlimited\WurmLauncher). 2, Create a text doc call it steam_appid.txt 3, Open the doc and type 366220 and save. 4, Right click WurmLauncher.exe (the file with the W icon) and create shortcut. 5, Place shortcut on desktop.
From now on run Wurm unlimited from the created shortcut. It will still run in steam but you can run as many instances that you want.
i understand that this is fully steam approved

I've tried this trick before and never works for me. Instead of opening a new wurm unlimited launcher it just switches my screen back to the original WU instance I'm playing. Not sure why. I still have to kill steam then run another instance and then get booted for authentication purposes then kill steam again and finally it will let me on the second attempt usually. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks

Thanks Make sure you create a new text file with notepad, type the text 366220 in and then save as steam_appid in the WurmLauncher directory and then create the desktop shortcut and run from there. The first time I did it, I didn't save it as a proper txt file, once I corrected that, it worked fine. Happy to connect with you later and run through it with you.

I have created the file and is available here 1drv.ms/t/s!Avk9YjlApYWcjbQbtHFpzY_Xc9nEGw Download and place in your Steam WurmLauncher directory [Your Install Directory]\Steam\steamapps\common\Wurm Unlimited\WurmLauncher Then create a shortcut to your desktop like this "[Your Install Directory]\Steam\steamapps\common\Wurm Unlimited\WurmLauncher\WurmLauncher.exe" You should then be able to use this shortcut multiple times NOTE: I have Steam running before I click the shortcut

You have to be manually launching WurmLauncher.exe, shortcut or otherwise. You cannot launch the extra instances through Steam or through a taskbar pin/etc.

I've used the "BDew" method for months and always launch from a shortcut pinned on the Start Menu (don't want to go digging for the steam folder).
Normally I would use Taskbar pin but there it does as Esroh described and simply focuses on my current play window instead of launching a new client, =unless= I right-click the shortcut twice and then select Open or Open As Administrator and then it works fine but that's too many extra clicks to suit me... though still less trouble than launching it from Steam folder

Worth noting that the game downloads with a copy of the server installation as well, aptly named WurmServerLauncher, right next to the WurmLauncher folder. Why am I mentioning this? Because they ship it with a copy of a working steam_appid.txt. You can just copy that one to the client.

Right I also came across this today, quite funny but well the only way you could run more than one server at once.

So I tried this method for running multiple clients this morning. I followed the instructions to the letter and it did not work. When I had the steam_appid file in my Wurm launcher folder the shortcut would cause a red crash each time. Basically the crash log said Steam was not running so the game couldn't launch. I could still launch WU from my steam client, but not the shortcut. When I removed the text file the game launched correctly from the shortcut. It even did this when I downloaded the file provided in this thread as well as creating the file myself. I have decided against bothering with multiple clients, but I figured I would pass along my experience here.

it should also work right away without starting it via steam first. Do you have Family View activated? Because with Family view activated you get the same error when you try to launch it via the shortcut ("Steam not running ...")
