The first Valentine's Day was in the year 496! Having a particular Valentine's Day is a very old tradition, thought to have originated from a Roman festival. The Romans had a festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February - officially the start of their springtime. Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity but was outlawedโas it was deemed โun-Christianโโat the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love.
or
The ancient Romans may also be responsible for the name of our modern day of love. Emperor Claudius II executed two men โ both named Valentine โ on Feb. 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine's Day.
I am going with the first one. Spring celebrations. Happy Valentines.
