Welcome to Liberty Lives - # 9
Zheddmar - Mayor Wreck
Wreck was quietly pounding away at some armour, doing a little plate smithing when Elfin caught up with him at Zheddmar. It was hot work and he was sipping pale ale. He had just achieved his skill goal, 99. Now his attention may turn to get his mining skill to the same level. Wreck loves to have goals, he loves it more when they are reached.
Wreck has been playing Wurm since 2013. He blames long-time friend Karthannar for luring him into it. They met in WoW when it was first launched, while they were questing. Wreck had a guild, Karth’ became an officer, and the two of them built it up to become very successful.
With Wurm, Karth’ kept sending Wreck pictures of a house he was building, fences and his farm. The game began to look interesting to Wreck. He finally found that he could not resist, he had to join to have a look-see. Pristine was the server that they played on. Pristine is joined only to Release.
Wreck found that the Wurm Online community and the limited instant gratification in achievements and skilling kept him interested. He found he had to play/work hard to achieve.
Wreck: “Nothing was super easy. And, because of this game style, it kept most of the immature players away - less drama in the community. Mostly people who just wanted to have fun.
“I logged in at Blossom, the Pristine starter town and Karth’ was there to pick me up by large cart. He brought me to Karthwasten, his deed there. It was not far from the Tunnel of Unrest.
“It was just a 1x1 shack, a wooden fence, and a campfire. It really felt like we were roughing it.
“Every time a spider came by, we jumped into the 1x1 shack until it went away.
“We weren't skilled enough to take it and there were no towers around. Of course, then, I had no idea what a guard tower was. It was scary but fun at the same time. Pop out, build something, jump back in for safety. Rinse and repeat until we had the skill to protect ourselves.
“First thing we did was make a full fence around the deed so nothing could come in. When we could afford it, we hired a deed guard. ‘Course the money factor of WO."
They did what they could to survive such as selling corpses to the token. Those first few months were rough.
Wreck: “We even sold our starter sleep powder and referral to give us a boost at the beginning. We used that money to get some armour and weapons at Blossom.
“Then we sat down and discussed skills. Karth’ was our blacksmith, I was our mason. Eventually I passed him in mining and supplied him.
“As time went on Ivan joined us as well. Between the three of us we split our skills so we could do most things in the village.
“Ivan is a real life friend as Karth’ is now too. Ivan is my little brother's school friend and became mine.”
Wreck is a veteran MMOs game player. His first MMO game was called The Realm. It was on dial-up. He was around 16 years old at the time.
He knew from other games how to make alt characters for priests so it was easiest to just use the same names on Wurm.
Talaku, his Inscriptionist and Herbalist in WoW is now his Fo priest in Wurm. There are also Vynora priest and Magranon priest, Zeheko and Wrafk.
He just played the main character, Wreck first. Then the Fo priest, Talaku, to help him heal when levelling his fighting skills.
On Liberty, Wreck has the most skills and on Novus Wrecked has the rest as the new server enabled him to try out ‘new’ skills. Basically there is Wreck, then alts for each priest.
Then Wreck became a CA having been approached and having thought it over for a time. This meant helping other players in game and answering questions on game play.
Eventually he became a GM, Thaurissan was born.
He found it hard to play and be GM at first, now his time is split 50/50 which works well.
As well as a full-time job Wreck has a family. Wreck balances his family, his full-time job and his gaming.
His wife is fully supportive. Married for 20 years this June and they have five children.
When asked how he does it Wreck shared.
Wreck: “Well on that one I got lucky. My wife is very supportive. Between my family and my work schedule (third shift), I have a few hours to devote to the game while the house is quiet.
“When I wake up, I have a few hours with the family so my time on-line is sparse. But in the overnight hours, I can support Sklo. I sleep during the day when my kids are in school.
“I will give you a typical day for Wreck. Eight am - four pm = sleep. Four pm - ten pm or midnight, depending on stuff, = family time. Midnight - eight am = my time / house-work time.
“So during "my time" I'll split my time between Sklo and getting stuff done about the house without any traffic.
“My wife is awesome and very supportive of all my hobbies, as well as my work schedule.”
Wreck agrees that good organisation and teamwork are the keys.
Another of Wreck’s passions/hobbies is home brewing.
Wreck: “Brewing all starts with an oven, cauldron, water, hops, grains, and sugar. In the game we don't have yeast, so a corked wine barrel with a wood scrap has to do.
“Brewing for me started when a friend of mine gave me a Christmas gift. It was called 'The Beer Machine' and was a very simple kit to make okay beer from.
“I tried it a couple of times. Ivan and I tasted the final product and said, ‘yeah okay this is beer but nothing fancy’.
“It was at that point I decided to do some internet research to see how else to make beer.
“I also wanted more of a challenge to this newly-found hobby. So I graduated to making five-gallon beer kits on my kitchen stove.
“At the time, since I knew no better, those seemed to turn out fantastic. So I continued doing that for about a year at which point, the interest got stronger, so I then changed to a more professional process and went to All-Grain.
“All-Grain is basically doing everything yourself with each individual ingredient. You pick out the grains and hops you want to use. You mash the grains in a device called a mash tun. That produces the wort. Then you can add in your hops and whatever you want in there.
“That's the bulk of it. Mash, sparge, boil, ferment. That's very high level of course.
“It was seven years ago that I started the hobby.”
Then Wurm bought brewing into the game and Wreck found that it pretty much lined up with reality.
Wreck: “I would say it's about as close as you can get it without changes to the cooking system or adding more ingredients to the database so it works well enough. There is definitely a lot more involved in the real-life version. I've helped to try and make it a little closer to the real thing. For example the fermenting times weren't very accurate, neither was the distilling. Hopefully others feel the same about the new timing. As for equipment, I keep adding to what I have so it seems elaborate now. This has taken my end-product to the next level and made the hobby more enjoyable for me.
“My water skin is usually filled with beer, not water. Drink of champions.
“I think it was 25 barrels of beer to fill the fountain in my deed.”
“This passion for brewing in game is carried over from real life where I am a homebrewer always looking to better my craft.
Wrecked Brewery is my RL Home Brewery.
(www.facebook.com/WreckedBrewery or on Youtube as Wrecked Brewery where I try to post weekly about my update
I tip-toed quietly away, leaving Wreck sipping his pale ale in the light of the forge.
“Let's go check it out!
Wreck: “So the brewery was the first to get lined with hops trellis. We need good hops to make the best beer on Sklo
“Additional hops line the deed as well since we need a lot.
“Coming inside we have lots of beer stored here, the distillery for our hard stuff...
“Behind you, you'll notice the red keg. That was our very first batch
Elfin peeks in the back, “Ah, so this room is where it begins?”
Wreck: “Yep back here is the kitchen, where all the magic happens.
Even a room for the bookkeeper.
Wreck: "Other side is our dine-in area. We also have a patio for folks to eat/drink outside.
"Back here is also our herb garden and bar.”
Iamyourfather laughing, “Another sip please Wreck.”
Wreck: “WAITER!”
“The Cerber's triple hops tastes extremely good. Ahhhhh. I always carry beer on me. Never know when you'll get thirsty.”
Passes one to Iam.
Wreck: “Here is the bar.”
Elfin: “Line up guys, she is giving out free drinks. She has all the recipes behind the bar.”
Wreck, sending drinks across the bar, “The secret ones are in the vault
Wreck: “Over here is the main workshop.
“Soon, I'll be moving out the tailoring and dye-making stuff to a separate building.”
“You'll notice I've been collecting 100ql lumps in crates. It's what happens when we get bored mining. We do weird things like collect lumps that we'll never use because they are perfect.
“My supreme forge is the centrepiece of the room. I love its blue glow!
“It works well as laid out. I can reach my BSB storage from down below.
“Throw ore straight into the forge.
“This design is thanks to Karth actually, I just built it. I am not that good with layouts so I hire Karth as my architect.”
“We agree on a style and I build it.
Wreck: “Moving on, the mine door attached to the workshop is direct access to new ores...”
Iamyourfather: “It’s a superb set-up.”
We were greeted in the mine by a lava spider.
Wreck: “Hmmm looks like we have company!”
Iamyourfather: “A mobile light.”
Elfin pats the lava spider. I hope that was not your pet Wreck.”
Wreck: “Maybe Ivan's. Oh well.
"Not much to see here except easy access to the ores. Made it look nice here as well.
“To the north, that passage goes to Karth's deed.
“My plate smithing services paid off. I rodded one of each ore in one place.”
“This tunnel is a work in progress. It will connect to the BG tunnel. I lined it up and just need to do it someday.
“Someday.... it is not on my radar right now.”
“This tunnel goes to more ore. I like the idea of a storied approach. Doing the best I can with a mine.
“Again, work in progress. I mine as I need stuff.
“You'll notice a theme with my lamps. Generally the copper lamps are in the mine. I use bronze up on the surface.
“I love the way this pottery looks so I use it where I can.
“Down here it kinda reminds me of a subway look and feel.
“I also love red colour.
“That's why the main building is in pottery.
“Black is second favourite colour, thus the slate.”

Wreck: “We've held a couple sermons here over the years.
“It's very functional and holds lots of people.
“Everyone inside is a listener. Also people at the bar are listeners ”
Wreck pointed out the seryll lamps. More red stuff.
Bell tower.
Wreck: “Hello people in the bell tower!”
Iamyourfather: “Great views across the deed from up here.”
Wreck: “My storage area. I recently started to organize it. With those new storage racks, it's made this place look A LOT better. It used to be a dump in here.”
“There's also a second story to this, accessible by cart....if you follow me.
“I haven't done anything with this yet, but I have plenty of room for stuff.”
Wreck: “Next up is my house. This one has been furnished by Elfin.
Wreck: “The 1st floor is a library/hang-out area.
“I can't wait until we get the mod to put stuff on tables.
“Also I use red where I can.”
Wreck: “Upstairs is my bedroom.
Wreck: “Got all my drake sets in the wardrobes. Note the teacup on my nightstand.
Wreck: “Then up on the roof, my balcony for hanging-out on a nice summer's night or for taking a dip in the hot tub.”
Wreck: “My next building is the Hotel. Ready for any travelling guests.
“Each room is colour coded.
Wreck: “The Red room.
[/url
Wreck: “The Rainbow room is kid-friendly.”
Elfin: “I see you have a building of each sort of material including render.”
Wreck: “That's right, thanks for pointing that out. That is intentional to try out all the new wall types.”
Wreck: “That was the first floor of the hotel, there's also the second floor with overseeing down to the street.”
Wreck: “This was the beer fountain. I need to refill it. Twenty-five barrels will fill it with beer.
“I've done that twice so far. The beer in there takes a really long time to decay back to water...like months.”
Wreck: “The Green room and the Purple room.”
“Beside the hotel is my clay and peat pit.
“The Wreck colossus was built by Stargrace. I dyed it.”
Iamyourfather: “Have you always been MR from WO days?” (Iamyourfather asks that as red is the MR colours).
Wreck: “Never did PvP on WO. I just like red. I bought MR stuff on WO though.”
Wreck: “Small farm here for brewing. Right now its sugar growing.
“I cycle between sugar, barley, wheat...whatever I need.”
Wreck: “This is technically the back gate.
Wreck: “Here's the beehive area for the mead. This area took lots of surface mining and days logging in alts for the enchanted grass.
Wreck: “Up top is a pass-thru to the guard tower for travellers going around the deed. I don't like to block anyone from travelling if I can help it.
“It takes you around the deed to the highway on the mountain.”
“Same thing for the bottom road, but it doesn’t go anywhere right now but to the other side of my deed.
“It used to connect the road until I built the bridge.
“Now it goes to a public mine and other side of the deed.”
Ivan is blamed for the bridge of course.
Wreck: “In here are the stables.
“Sheep, Cows, Bulls, Horses, HH...
“Mostly four and five speed here. I lost a lot of stock when I played on Novus. Now I'm rebuilding stock back up again.
“A few horses have died in here, so we blame Ivan.”
Wreck: “Dragon Skulls. After two years on Sklo I finally got these back-to-back in April by winning raffles at the unique events. So now I have one from each server.
They are from Red Drakes and Dragons too. I am very happy about that.”
Wreck: “Over here is my main farm and orchard. Sections of each type of harvestable tree or bush I think.
“I fill up the FSB and move it later in bulk. Much easier.”
Wreck: “I think Ivan came thru here and knocked down some trees... Yes I'm planting oak trees for acorns, since I've recently taken on dye-making for a new skill to try.”
Wreck: “Here's the ally mine I was talking about and the road connecting.
“I have planned it so there are no dead ends and travellers don't get stuck.”
Wreck: “LWW is the name of my guild from World of Warcraft.”
Wreck: “This is the newest building under construction.
“I'm trying to build a gazebo. It still needs to be furnished.
“I sit in this chair here while I tell the workers what to do.”
We had one last peek at Wreck’s deed from the workshop roof. On the way down we saw that he had put some gnomes in a trash heap. Wreck does not like gnomes.
Wreck: “Well thank you for coming over and hanging out for a little while. It was fun.”
Elfin: “Thanks for your time Wreck, an organised, well thought out deed.”
Iamyourfather: “Thank you for showing us around.”
Goodgirl: “Beautiful deed Wreck.”
We said our goodbyes and heading home in different directions while Zheddmar was bathed in moonlight.
