Liberty Lives
Faustens Castle - Mayor Faustens
I met Faustens early in September when he was helping another new player get restarted in the land of Liberty. Even though he was very aware that his skills were low. This was just before the Imp-along, so I invited him to come to get his tools and weapons improved up to at least QL70. His first reaction was to immediately offer assistance. I accepted his offer of garlic as the priests use a lot of flavor in enchanting player tools and weapons. As we worked out the delivery details the leg on his computer chair broke in real life. Such is the life of a games player.
When I asked for his story Faustens was quick to warn me that his deed was FAR from done as he had only just begun to play Wurm. He asked advice about marble floors and was disappointed for a moment when he found that they needed a skill of 40 paving to do. This only delayed his enthusiasm momentarily and he worked to gain the necessary skill to achieve the floors he wanted in the house. He invited me to drop by and see the progress.
Days passed and real life got a bit bumpy however Faustens believes in keeping a sense humour both in Wurm and in real life.
Finally we caught up with each other after the Liberty Double Dragon Slaying. Faustens had won an armour set in the raffle.
I rode down to visit and have a tour of his deed.
My first question was how long had Faustens been playing Wurm? I was surprised when he said just two months. He had only played WO for two days and then jumped into WU. He had been looking for a game as an alternative to Minecraft. Something that had RPG elements and was 'deeper'.
We arranged to met at Genesis where Faustens had begun his WU journey.
We rode down the road to where he had first settled, Lewies Refugium. As we rode he spoke of his first impressions.
Faustens Story:
Faustens quickly found the frustration of wurm graphics for the new player. The game kept crashing. He quickly upped his computer’s RAM and found that he was astounded at how good Wurm looked. It dawned on him that he was actually in a small city, one that was completely player made. He was inspired and became keen to build his free deed. In WO he had begun his own home however money was an issue. Now that the money was no longer an issue the desire to have his own home and land was strong.
He wandered off with this in mind and was distracted by all the signs which were shiny and glowing. He promptly got lost twice, once in going to the top of Genesis castle.
Once he had finished exploring Genesis he hatched his horses and was surprised that he could not ride them. He never thought to ask and did not know that an activated rope was needed to lead and ride. Frustrated he left them behind and explored on foot. He left the road almost immediately and saw that most spots near Genesis seemed to have a deed on them already. He tried to place a deed and the game told him he could not as there was a perimeter. Scratching his head about what a perimeter was he continued to explore.
Finally he found a spot and set up a deed, planned his house and then had to puzzle out how to build - it seemed that he needed nails and he had none. Also he needed more wood. Building a large cart he dragged it until he hit a mountain and became lost again. All he wanted was a small home. It seemed all the resources to build a home were far away.
Eventually he needed to return to Genesis to get some refreshments from the Bartender. It was then that his cursor hit the signs which revealed that all the resources he had been looking for were right there in Genesis. He also realised that the julebord gave food and drink as well.
Faustens shook his head as he recalled that he had spent all day wandering, looking for nails and they were right there, just around the corner.
At that stage it felt like he was spending more time in the help chat and reading than actually playing the game.
He remembers well, when in WO, seeing someone cut a tree and becoming frustrated that he could not. Finally he asked how. From there, there has been no stopping. The same player who took time to explain how to activate and use tools gave him some items to help out.
We arrived at his first home in Liberty. I was please to see that he had security set up.
There was the forges area, the kitchen, and room for a bed and a balcony which looked out over a fruit orchard.
He remembered that Arbi had sent him some sprouts.
When he had his home he began to fight; a few mobs, cows, horses - nothing big. Though it was not long before he stumbled over a huge spider. After that fight he made it back to his little deed seriously wounded. Worried he asked in chat how to be cured and was directed to Genesis where there should be cotton. It was just his luck that he had a poison wound as well, which is how he learnt about first aid.
He then decided that it was time for him to have a working character and Faustens was born and his original character, Iewie, retired. His character Faustens was spawned.
With his new character a mine was needed to support his first character, Iewie. He stumbled across an old deed which happened to be nearby. It not only had a mine, it also had walls. They were badly damaged, however they were still standing.
[10:11:38] <Faustens> He needed a house, at best with a mine, and close by, to support Iewie...
At this point in the interview we both got distracted as the mine had a serious dropshaft, a legacy from previous owners. Faustens shared that he had forgotten how many times he had gone into the mine and fallen down them. The first time he fell down he had to mine his way up. He had then fallen in so many times that he built a fence around the top. Being a magranon priest I offered to cast the strongwall spell to fix them. That was end of the interview for that day.
The next day Faustens showed me around the buildings of Faustens Castle. First was the workshop where he had been making a still, then onto his living space, and then the bedroom. All of which are on-going projects in various stages of completion.
Learning to build in Wurm is one of the things that Fausten really enjoys. He has found Wurm is not a game where you instantly can have buildings unlike Ultima Online or Anarchy Online. In Wurm it takes time to learn how to do and then actually build. Once he had figured the basics it became fun and still is.
Then came a special moment in the tour for me. Fausten showed me his favourite place. He led me to a beautiful area right in the centre of the Castle where alters and shrines had been set up.
Fausten shared that he lives in a small county in Germany. He works as an apothecary of sorts. He works shifts and so is on-line at varying times.
We then walked the wall which surrounds the Castle area. The wall has been built so you can walk right around. The views were great, showing the best of Wurm.
As I gazed out over the main entrance I noticed two gravestones. Fausten explained that they belonged to Iewie and Faustens and were there as a reminder to pay more attention when travelling.
While we stood admiring the view Faustens explained how it took almost a month for him to build and he had to hire two players, Tormund and Kierthekebab to help him level out the terrain. First they moved the dirt and then surface mined the area. With the resulting six thousand stone shards he was able to make the bricks to build. He spoke very highly of them both and counts them as friends now. Being able to form the land is one thing that he enjoys in Wurm. To be able to tear down a mountain or build a tunnel.
I noticed a slate brick building which turned out to be Faustens' barracks and storage.
We began the tour with a viewing of the wine cellar which at the moment is just decoration, Fausten has plans though. There were enough barrels to store brews, for an army......or two.
Onto his kitchen. An army marches on it's stomach.
Faustens: "If you’re on an eight-hour guard duty, you get hungry."
Then it was up the stairs, the building of which really pleases Fausten. Just up one floor is the storage area. A sleeping room for the guards and the armoury.
Finally up to the roof. Again great views of the whole Castle compound.
Back down to the ground and onto the garage or drop area. A few horses as Iewie has realised he no longer has to drag the cart and refuses to do so any more.
I spied a boat in the garage and Faustens offered to show me the harbour.
After a fairly long wagon ride to the coast we came to Faustens’ harbour, built so he can quickly sail from Novus to Liberty and to have somewhere safe to harbour his boats. There was also a building that is used to build the boats in.
His large boat took three days to build. The second one only two days, that included gathering and making all the materials needed.
Once he was stranded on Novus when the player who took him over logged out. Another player helped him out by giving him a horse and helping him out generally. As they chatted the player mentioned that he liked knarrs. Once home Faustens built him one as thanks.
Faustens has plans for the harbour. He wants to dredge it out and build a caravel. It is another work in progress.
We returned to the Castle and Faustens’ favourite spot where there are shrines to R.A.
I could feel it was a special spot and Faustens explained that R.A. was his father who died on 22nd November 2011. R.A. were the first two initials of his name. He loved MMO's. Building the shrines and creating a special place reminds Faustens of his Father while in game.
As I left I had to thank Faustens for the reminder of how puzzling Wurm can be when you are totally new to the game. Some of the struggles and frustrations of learning the mechanics and putting them into practice.
For him the phrase "just my luck" sums up his experiences. When building a knarr he got three rare rolls and no rare. When building the second he got four rare rolls and still no rare.
Faustens: "That’s just my luck."
I rode away smiling as Faustens improved his still and said that he had just learnt that it needed to be 'glowing hot' to imp.
