I've been harvesting eggs from my coop for some time now and every single one I examine is always infertile. I read somewhere that it's about 1 in 5 that should be fertile but I'm way out of that ratio so far of none fertile and lots infertile. Is there some trick I don't know about to get some fertile eggs?

It's full-on RNG. And then getting them to hatch........ there's suspicion that server creature cap has an influence........................................................................ and full-on RNG.
What can I say.

I was afraid that was the case. I guess I'll just have to hope that I'll get lucky with a fertile egg and hatched before my hens die. lol
Thanks.

Fertile eggs are only 1 in 5 if the Hens are free roaming, inside the coop they lay eggs more often but the chance drops to 1 in 20. Any fertile eggs laid in the coop will automatically be named fertile egg, so you'll know immediately. However, fertile eggs are still only a 10% chance to successfully hatch (unless the cap on chickens is reached on the server, then it is 0%)
The good news is, as long as you keep your hens inside the coop, they shouldn't die on you.

If you are worried about hens dying off before they can reproduce, use the caring feature from animal handling. This extends their life to the point I don't think I've ever had a cared for animal die of old age on Sklotopolis.
I had an alt put a couple of hens on care. I know that is mostly used for your best wagon pulling team, but I purposely raised animal handling on all my alts just so I can preserve a selection of animals.

For immortal animals, you need to keep them well fed and away from sol demons and lava fiends. They like the taste of immortal animals. RIP Rolfflutter...
