Hello Sklotopolisians!
Back a few weeks ago, I accidentally sailed into a lake right in the center of Novus, and ... didn't know how to continue my trip home. I was "close" to home, I looked to the Northwest: my home was there, NW of this lake, but separated by a big steppe and a desert. It was on the shores of the next lake, you see, and those two lakes weren't connected. Since last I checked, knarrs can't fly, my ship stood stranded at the Midlake for a few days.
(No no no, don't even say it, don't utter the dreadful words "ship transporter": I've heard about that pesky invention alright, but consider this: ships are born to be free and sail the seven seas, not to be locked in a box. Knarrs are even 16 meters long(!), and you be telling me to scramble mine into a 2-meter box? "It's bigger on the inside", they said, yeah right, look, I can't risk my ship on such mythological stories, no boxes for my pretty, no sir, that's no solution.)
I stood there baffled and complained about it to my neighbours. And then we said... why not do it? There was already a water connection from Midlake to their deed in the SE corner of the steppe, then we needed to go from there, chip the rock under the steppe, then under the desert, to reach the NW lake. There is a highway up above, cross the steppe and desert, so the canal naturally fits "under the highway", to allow freedom to move around for ships as well.
Aaaaand here it goes: the blue canal between the big yellow X is newly chipped out, going below the steppe and desert,
- from Neriak andistyr.github.io/wu-map/14821/#1574_1697
- to Downtown andistyr.github.io/wu-map/14821/#downtown-1804
This way, the connection between the two lakes is completed. This also means that the Midlake, the lake pretty much in the center of Novus, is now connected to the West coast. The canal is at -25, 3-tiles wide, for all ships have their rights to move freely, y' know.
It is catseyed all the way, since in my understanding that was the bit needed to show up automatically on our livemap. We completed the catseye connection last night, and this morning, sure enough, it shows up! \o/
The new sections of the canal have a total of 537 tiles -- oh as counted by the waystones, I...didn't count, I just mined. Thankfully I didn't do the math beforehand , my awesome neighbours Dweia and Degu did. They planned, mined all the way from Downtown, and even took care of all the accessories needed, like, I dunno, about half a gazilion beams, and slapped me occasionally when I got too lazy at my end. Without them, I'd still ask about flying over the steppe!
There are still work-in-progress details - willows need to grow!, but everything is now passable, lit, connected. A pic from Neriak end (at the western lake):
All credit for this crazy work goes to Dweia, who mined huge swaths of the way and took care of just about everything needed, Degu, who planned and mined the Downtown end, and many thanks go to all those great wurmians who helped with beams, buoys, and whatever else I may not even thought about too well beforehand.
