Hello there! Welcome to the world of Mini Pets! My name is Danky. People call me the Professor. The world is inhabited by... ahem, sorry, wrong game.
This guide will show you some of the ins and outs of pet ownership. Mini pets are relatively simply creatures to take care of, but you should always strive to be a good owner.
Disclaimer: Some information from the guide may be omitted until discovered by players. I will update the guide once players are aware of them.
Obtaining a pet
Pet ownership can be a lengthy process, but rewarding once you have the one you want.
Method 1: Find an egg
Eggs can current be obtained through loot chests. Eggs will hatch into a random pet, picked from a preset pool. Some eggs have more uncommon creatures in them.
Creatures hatched from eggs are given random conditions/colors.
Method 2: Catch one
Empty pet balls can also be found in chests. Unlike the egg, you can essentially 'pick' the creature you would like by throwing the ball at it in combat. Caught pets retain their condition/color.
Catching a pet won't be too easy. The chance to catch one starts low and goes up the more you damage it, however, the creature's own combat strength will lower it further. A Cow? Weak and easy. A NoGump? Difficult and painful.
The ball is never lost if you fail, so don't be afraid to try many times! The creature does get to hit you the whole time though, so maybe be a little afraid.
DISCLAIMER. You cannot catch: Players. NPCs. Uniques. Other people's pets. (almost) everything else is free game.
There exists other methods to obtain pets, however I'll go over them once they're available to players.
Using your pet
All pets stay trapped comfortably tucked inside their pet ball until you're ready to have them follow you around.
Simply right click on the ball and call them to your side, they will begin to follow you around everywhere(1)(2) you go. If you want your pet to sit in one area, you can also command them to stay put, and they will.
In order to avoid pet-on-pet conflicts with the same master, you may only have one pet following you outside of its ball at any time. Calling a different pet will cause the first one to stop following you.
Pets will also get lonely if you log out of the game while they are out, and will automatically return to their ball when you leave. Fear not, you can simply call them again when you return.
While pets do not get hungry, they do appreciate a treat every once in a while. If you happen across any while hunting loot, you may want to toss them a treat for being a faithful companion. Feed your pet enough and it will start to grow bigger!
1- Pets cannot swim. Their little arms/legs/appendages cannot maintain buoyancy.
2- Some areas radiate negative energy that pets dislike, such as rifts and certain event areas. This will cause pets to retreat into their ball until you leave the area.
Personalizing your pet
(Most) Pets come with their own cute name they prefer to be called when you obtain them. Some owners may decide to nickname their pet to form a deeper bond with it, in this case you can simply right-click -> rename on their ball to give them a new nickname, which they will display while following you around.
- If your pet is already following you when you rename it, simply call it out again to update the name.
While some pets may also come in different colors, a large number of them don't have colorful sub-species. Fortunately, all pets love to show off flashy colors, and will let you help them to do so. If you want to give your pet a fancy color, all you must do is simply use a color token on their ball, and the pet will inherit the color.
- There is no confirmation or preview of this, yet! YMMV with coloring pets.
-- If your pet is out when you apply the color, simply call them out again to apply the color.
Dealing with a pet death
Just kidding, pets can't die. They're immortal beings that can't be harmed, won't age, or feel hunger.
Your pet will be fine following you anywhere, including going out hunting with you.
Q & A
Q: Pet battles!?
A: No. At least, not anytime soon.
Q: Can I un-color a pet?
A: ...Not at the moment
Q: Is (insert creature here) available as a pet?
A: Chances are the answer is YES. The only creatures not available generally have issues, such examples being the rift ogre mage or rift caster.
Q: Can I trade/sell my pet?
A: Yes. The ball dictates ownership, so giving it to another player makes them the owner of the pet.
Q: Will my pet cross servers?
A: Your pet will always be available from the ball no matter which server you're on.
Q: Are champion pets bigger?
A: All creature conditions are purely for their color cosmetic, and thus champions or similar will not be larger.
Q: Can a pet be rare?
A: Yes, yes it can. It will shine too.Q: How many pets are there?
A: Not including ones available to GMs only... there's a little over 80 to collect.
Q: Does that include uniques?
A: Yes, mini uniques exist.
