This usually means a failure to authenticate. The server's up and running just fine, if it wasn't you'd outright fail to connect. Make sure Steam isn't in offline mode.

Not having any issues at all here tonight, so like others have mentioned unfortunately I think this is something on your end - where abouts are you located at in the world? Maybe there's something along the way bugging out.

it just at night though. i get in fine in the morning and at lunch. i am in iowa. recap - log in, sometimes i just see me hanging in nether water all around, cant move sometimes i get partial load with some trees but water everywhere else, can move but dont have inventory or able to do anything sometimes i get fully loaded but still cant open or do anything after about 8 attempts to get logged in last night, finally after 30 minutes fully logged in we have a 20Mb/s cable modem now. so can handle a lot of stuff. usually a netflix stream running at night when i am trying to connect, one of my sons watching cartoons

There's a lot of variables here that are still unknown, so I'm not gonna claim anything in particular, but HD video is a LOT of data. Go to speedtest.net while you're having problems and see what you've really got available to you.

i'm going to have to agree with esroh, as soon as i kick the boys off their computer and make them go to bed, i can get logged in. must be a bandwidth issue.
